THE PROCESS
-
All good design is based on research. I researched the history of the library as an institution to its origins in 3000 BC.
-
I created a timeline of key periods in the development of the library as a central community organization. This timeline is represented in section time periods.
-
The timeline focuses on the key contributors to the development of the library we know today.
-
I relied on my training/skills in making handmade paper, plate printing and graphic design.
-
I used polymer plates to screenprint-emboss the section dividers for each key period.
INTERIOR PAGES
-
The timeline breakdown was printed on off-white cardstock from Paper Source with metallic gold ink.
-
The section dividers were comprised of handmade and vellum papers.
MAKING THE PAPER
The handmade paper is made with cotton from bleached blue jeans and cornstalk from local grocery stores;
-
These two ingredients were cooked with soda ash
-
Hand beaten
-
Several of the sheets have wheat stalks inclusions and/or are decorated via pulp painting.
COPPER COVERS
This outline of the Oak Park Public Library’s new building was created in Adobe Illustrator. This design was etched onto a copper plate using a laser-cutter at Pumping Station One, my local makerspace.
The building design was etched in ferric chloride to bring out the silhouette on the copper plate. The etched covers were oxidized to make the outline of the Oak Park Library rendering more pronounced.
